The Maid and the Crocodile is a wonderful novel about a young girl named Small Sade. Small Sade desperately requires a job, hopefully as a maid, but it is very hard to get a job with her unique appearance (due to vitiligo) and her misshapen feet. To make matters worse for herself, before Small Sade can get a job, she accidentally binds herself to a controversial being called the crocodile (who is rumored to eat pretty girls) for what’s apparently her whole entire life!
To save herself from being eaten, Small Sade decides to tell the crocodile her secret. Not only is Sade a weird looking orphan, but she’s also a curse eater. She has the ability to change people’s fates by cleaning their houses. The crocodile god pronounces that they are bound forever but Small Sade tries to ignore him, this causes her to ignore the fact that her new employer the manipulatively warm Mamadele is just using her as a ticket back into high society. Small Sade is determined to make a life for herself in Oluwan, but with the circumstances she’s facing can she do it??
The Maid and the Crocodile is a great book! However, it started off a little slow and was not as interesting as I was hoping. While it may be for some people, it is not for me. I recommend this book toward older audiences such as fifteen to seventeen year olds. This book is a great story if you put aside the lack of action in the beginning. I believe that this book, as long as it reaches its target audience, will be a hit.
